So you want to join a survey?

To join in, simply register through this website to begin you’re bug hunting adventure! You will need to choose a waterway near your home or school and also get your equipment together before you go out to catch those bugs.

Once you've caught, identified and counted the different types of bugs, you need to put your results in on the result pages of this website. Our number crunching bug calculator will do the rest, giving you the stream pollution index for your waterway. This number gives you a guide to how healthy or polluted your waterway is.

The Bug Survey is based on the number and types of water bugs you find in your waterway. If a stream is polluted more tolerant water bugs will usually be found in greater numbers than sensitive ones.

The Bug Detective Guide will help you to identify your catch. It has pictures and descriptions of some of the common water bugs found in our streams.

An updated Bug Detective Guide was posted here on 03 October 2003. Make sure you have the latest Guide by downloading this one now.
