Water bugs are found in freshwater rivers, creeks, lakes,
wetlands or dams. They choose their home for camouflage, protection
and food. A good site has a variety of habitats. Bare areas
like sand banks and muddy beds without stones, wood or plant
life don't support many water bugs.
Bugs are found in still (pools) and running (riffles) water.
In fast flowing water, bugs are found on or under submerged
wood, rocks or stones. Some bugs swim freely in still or slow
moving water, while others hide among aquatic weeds, or crawl
and burrow at the bottom.
When sampling at the edge of the stream, it is best to select
a sheltered alcove, if possible with overhanging vegetation
and water plants. Areas that have been recently flooded are
not suitable because the water bugs that were washed away
may not have recolonised. Deep water and very fast-flowing
water can be unsafe and should be avoided.
Remember to sample a site only once per season. For safety
reasons, always sample with a buddy. Also, at the end of the
day, make sure you return your bugs to where you found them
alive!
